Things to do in Nairobi National Park
The core activity is a game drive in a pop-up van or Landcruiser. Add Hippo Pools, the Ivory Burning Site, birding at the dams, or a Langata conservation stop. Night drives need rangers. You do not walk the predator plains.

Game drives
Open-roof vehicle, licensed driver-guide, radio calls for lion and rhino. Morning 06:00 to 11:30 or afternoon 13:00 to 18:30. Private vehicle unless you book the group joining safari. This is the activity the park exists for. Everything else is an add-on.
Can you walk in the park?
Not as a free walking safari. Predators and buffalo share the roads. The exception is Hippo Pools: a 1 km ranger trail along the river, hippo and crocodile, walkers out by 17:15. Nairobi Safari Walk is a boardwalk next to Langata Gate on a separate ticket. It is not a game-drive on foot.
Ivory Burning Site
Just inside Langata Main Gate. Kenya burned confiscated ivory here in 1989 (12 tonnes) and 2016 (105 tonnes). Plaques, monument, watering hole. We stop for 10 to 15 minutes on main-gate circuits. East Gate layovers skip it if the clock is tight.
Bird watching
400-plus species. Dams and riverine bush in the same morning as giraffe and zebra. Tell us you care about birds and we slow down. A photography-paced Landcruiser is the better vehicle if the list matters more than covering kilometres. November to April is the migrant window. April rain can muddy tracks.
Orphanage, Safari Walk, Sheldrick
These sit at Langata, not on the southern plains. A typical conservation sequence is morning game drive, exit, Sheldrick 11:00, Giraffe Centre after noon. That is the full-day Nairobi safari. Animal Orphanage plus Safari Walk without a game drive is the KWS Nairobi Sanctuary Package. Park plus both sanctuaries is the Nairobi Package. Fees are on attractions.
Self-drive versus booking us
Self-drive: you bring the car, buy eCitizen tickets, stay on the roads, no guide. Fine if you know the park. Booking us: pop-up roof, driver-guide, hotel or JKIA pickup, vehicle fees included, guest tickets extra. International visitors on a first trip should not self-drive at 06:00 in a saloon.
How to get there
Hotel pickup, JKIA East Gate, Uber, matatu 24, or self-drive. The park is 20 to 40 minutes from town.
Best time to visit
Open all year. Dry months for cats on open grass. Wet months for birds and calves. Morning 06:00 is the default.
Park gates
Langata Main from hotels. East Gate from JKIA. Cheetah Gate on the south. Cashless eCitizen at every gate.
Wildlife and Big Four
Lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino. No wild elephants. Giraffe, zebra, and 400-plus birds against the city skyline.

Game drive, Hippo Pools walk, ivory site, birding, picnic dams, orphanage, Safari Walk, night drive.
Where to stay
No hotel inside the park. Park-edge lodges, Karen, Langata, and Mombasa Road. We pick up from all of them.
What to wear
