Maasai village visit near Nairobi
Short answer (updated October 2026): You can visit a Maasai community as a day trip from Nairobi, in Kajiado County to the south of the city. A good visit is run by the village itself: you are welcomed with song, shown the homes and livestock enclosures, and can buy beadwork directly. Ask before photographing anyone.

Who the Maasai are
The Maasai are a pastoralist people of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, known for cattle herding, red shukas and intricate beadwork. Many Maasai families live in Kajiado County, which borders Nairobi National Park to the south.
Cattle are at the centre of traditional Maasai life, as wealth, food and status. Homesteads, called enkang or manyatta, are ringed by a thorn fence with livestock enclosures inside and houses made of timber, mud and dung. Today many Maasai also work in towns, run businesses and send children to school, so a visit shows a living culture, not a museum.
The wild animals of Nairobi National Park share the open Kitengela plains with Maasai herds when they leave the park in the wet season. You can see that landscape on the southern loop of a full-day safari.
What happens on a visit
Expect a welcome song and dance, a walk around the homestead, a look inside a traditional house, a talk about cattle and daily life, a fire-making demonstration, and a chance to buy beadwork from the women who made it. Most visits take one to two hours.
- Welcome: the adumu jumping dance is often part of the greeting, and visitors may be invited to join in.
- Homestead walk: the livestock enclosure, houses and how they are built and repaired.
- Daily life: herding, water, school and how life is changing.
- Beadwork: each colour carries meaning. Buying directly is one of the most useful ways to support the family.
How to choose a good visit
Pick a visit organised with the community, where the entry fee goes to the village and the guide is a community member. Avoid roadside stops that pressure you to buy, and ask in advance what the fee covers.
- Ask who receives the fee and whether it supports a school, water project or the families.
- Agree the fee before you arrive and carry Kenya shillings in small notes for crafts.
- Expect friendly selling at the end. You are never obliged to buy.
Etiquette and photography
Ask before photographing anyone, and accept a no. Dress modestly, greet elders first, do not enter a house without being invited, and keep children's sweets and gifts for the teacher or guide rather than handing them out.

Combining a visit with a safari
The simplest plan is a morning game drive in Nairobi National Park from 06:00, then a community visit south of the park late in the morning. It also fits day three of a 3-day Nairobi itinerary.
We quote the visit with your game drive on WhatsApp, with the community fee shown separately. For other half-day options around the city, see things to do in Nairobi.

Maasai village visit FAQ
Can I visit a Maasai village on a day trip from Nairobi?
Yes. Maasai communities live in Kajiado County, south of Nairobi, within a day trip of the city. Tell us your date and we confirm a community visit that fits around your game drive.
Is it ethical to visit a Maasai village?
It can be. Choose a visit run by the community, where fees go to the village, ask before taking photographs and treat it as a visit to someone's home, not a show.
What should I wear?
Comfortable closed shoes, modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees, a hat and sunscreen. The ground is dusty in dry months and muddy after rain.
Can I combine it with Nairobi National Park?
Yes. A morning game drive from 06:00 leaves the late morning free for a community visit south of the park. Ask us on WhatsApp for timings.
