Nairobi National Park safari duration: half-day vs full-day
A half-day is about 4 to 6 hours from pickup to drop-off. A full day is about 8 to 10 hours. A "three-hour safari" usually spends too much of that time on the road and not enough of it in the park.
Short answer (updated October 2026): A half-day safari in Nairobi National Park takes 4 to 6 hours door to door, with 3 to 4 hours in the park. A full day takes 8 to 10 hours. Choose a half-day for the main animals before lunch, and a full day for the Hippo Pools, a picnic and the far south of the park.

| Booking | Door to door | Time inside the park | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning half-day | 05:00 pickup, back about 11:30 | Roughly 3 to 4 hours | Langata attractions. You can add them on another day. |
| Full day | About 8 to 10 hours | Morning drive, then you choose whether to stay in or exit | A free afternoon in the city |
| JKIA layover | Whatever the flights allow, on the private half-day rate | Often 2 to 4 hours if the connection is honest | Hippo Pools and the far south when the clock is tight |
| Weekend game drive | From the Kencom meet until drop-off | Similar park time to a private half-day | A private route |
| Photography full day | Dawn until late light | Most of the day, with a picnic inside | A rushed checklist of viewpoints |
The gate hours are 06:00 to 18:00. Every drive must leave before the 18:00 close. If you want both dawn and late light, book the full photography day and stay inside so you do not pay the KWS ticket twice.
Prices for each length are on the tour prices page: $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately) for a half-day, $380 for a full day.
Half-day vs full-day: which should you book?
Book a half-day if you have one morning, children, or a flight later the same day. Book a full day for photography, birding, the Hippo Pools and the southern plains, or if you want the best chance of cheetah and leopard. Both start with a 05:00 pickup.
| Half-day | Full day | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per group | $300 | $380 |
| Door to door | 4 to 6 hours | 8 to 10 hours |
| Area covered | Forest, central plains and dams | Adds the southern river country, Hippo Pools and a picnic site |
| Best for | Short stays, families, layovers | Photographers, birders, keen wildlife watchers |
| Park fee | Same single KWS ticket for the day | |
