Best time to visit Nairobi National Park

The park is open all year. The useful default is a morning drive, with a 05:00 pickup so you reach the gate for the 06:00 opening. Month matters less than being out before the grass and the traffic fill the view.

Short answer (updated October 2026): Nairobi National Park is open all year from 06:00 to 18:00. The drier months, June to October and January to February, make cats and rhinos easier to see. The best time of day is early morning: our drives start with a 05:00 pickup and are in the park at the 06:00 opening.

SeasonRough monthsWhat changes in the park
Drier monthsJune to October, and often January and FebruaryShorter grass. Cats and rhinos are easier to see on the open plains.
Long rainsMarch to MayGreener, birds are busy, calves appear. Tall grass can hide a lion that would have been obvious in September.
Short rainsOften October into November or DecemberSimilar to the long rains, with muddy tracks after a heavy night. The roof stays useful.
Any month, dawn05:00 pickupCooler air at this altitude, and fewer vehicles until later in the morning.
Any month, late afternoonFrom about 16:00 until the 18:00 closeBetter light for photographs. Less time if you arrive at 16:30. Our tours run mornings only, so this slot suits self-drive visitors.

Nairobi sits well above the hot lowland savannah. A dawn drive can feel cold in a pop-up roof even when the afternoon is warm. Bring a layer in July and August. Bring a light rain shell in April and November. The pack list is short.

If you only have one morning in the city, book that morning. Waiting for a "better month" on a two-day Nairobi stop is how people miss the park entirely.

Look for the park's wildlife in any season on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.

Morning or afternoon game drive?

Morning. At 06:00 the air is cool and predators that hunted overnight are often still in the open. By midday most animals rest in shade. All our game drives run in the morning; we do not run afternoon tours.

If you land late in the day, stay the night and join a morning drive the next day, or see the layover tour for flight-timed options. A full day lets you stay in the park after the morning: see half-day vs full-day.

Quick answers

Morning or afternoon?

Morning. The gates open at 06:00, the air is cooler and animals that hunted overnight have not always moved into cover. Our tours run mornings only, so late arrivals are best booked onto the next morning.
