Birds in Nairobi National Park
Published bird references for Nairobi National Park commonly list more than 400 species. You do not need to be a birder to notice ostrich on the grass and waterbirds at the dams. A focused bird morning is a different pace from a cat drive.
Common ostrich are the obvious large bird, and they show up in the same frames as giraffe and the skyline. Secretarybirds and rollers are among the species birders ask about on the open ground. The dams, including places drivers know as Athi, Hyena, and Nagolomon, hold waterbirds when there is water.
Wet months, roughly the long rains of March to May and the shorter rains late in the year, are the better bird window because of migrants and greener dams. They are the worse window for seeing a lion in long grass. If birds are the point, say so when you book. The vehicle will spend longer at water and less time chasing a cat report.
Bring binoculars. A phone photo from a moving roof is a poor tool for anything smaller than an ostrich.
Look for birds at the dams on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.
More animal guides: zebras, buffalo, cheetahs and leopards, with where and when each is usually seen.
