Buffalo in Nairobi National Park
Buffalo are one of the four big animals in this park, with lion, leopard, and rhino. They gather on the plains and around the dams. They are not a backdrop you walk up to.
Visitors sometimes dismiss buffalo because they look like livestock from a distance. Up close they are one of the animals guides give space to, especially old bulls lying off the track and herds with calves. The roof hatch is the right place to look. The ground is not.
Dams such as Athi Dam and Nagolomon are the usual places a drive checks for buffalo, and for the birds that use the same water. None of those stops is guaranteed on a short layover. If buffalo are a target, say so, and take a half-day rather than a rushed airport loop.
There is no elephant herd to complete a Big Five set. Buffalo plus rhino plus a cat is the honest big-animal hope. Leopard remains the rare one.
Look for buffalo on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.
More animal guides: zebras, cheetahs, birds and leopards, with where and when each is usually seen.
