Cheetahs in Nairobi National Park

Cheetahs use the open southern plains of Nairobi National Park, where short grass gives them room to hunt. They are one of the park's rarer sightings and a highlight when they appear.

Open grassland inside Nairobi National Park

Look for cheetahs on the open grass toward the southern boundary, often on a termite mound or a low rise, scanning for gazelle and impala. They hunt in daylight, so a morning drive is the best window. A southern entrance was even named Cheetah Gate, though it is now closed; use one of the three open gates.

The drier months, roughly June to October, keep the grass short and make cats easier to spot. See best time to visit. Vehicles stay on the roads, so a pair of binoculars helps.

Cheetah, lion and leopard all live in the park. Tell your guide which cat matters most and the route follows it.

Look for cheetahs on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.
