Where to stay in Nairobi
Areas, hotels, camps, villas, food and spas, chosen with your 05:00 safari pickup in mind.
For a Nairobi National Park safari, stay in Karen or Lang'ata to be closest to Main Gate, or on Mombasa Road near JKIA for East Gate and early flights. Westlands is best for restaurants and nightlife, the CBD for history and walking tours, and Kilimani for apartments. We pick you up from any Nairobi hotel or the airport at 05:00 for the 06:00 gate opening.
Best areas to stay in Nairobi
Choose your area by what you plan to do. Wildlife first means Karen or Lang'ata. City life means Westlands or the CBD. A short layover means a hotel near JKIA.

Karen
Karen is the leafy suburb at the foot of the Ngong Hills, named after the author Karen Blixen whose farmhouse is now a museum here. Big gardens, old trees and low-rise buildings make it feel more like the countryside than a capital. It is the natural base for a wildlife-heavy trip: the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick nursery via Mbagathi Gate, Kazuri Beads and the Blixen Museum are all close, and Main Gate is an easy pre-dawn run along Lang'ata Road. The trade-off is distance from the CBD and Westlands nightlife, and an evening out in town means a taxi ride. Karen suits families, couples and anyone whose main reason for visiting Nairobi is the animals.
- Park access: Close to Main Gate and Mbagathi Gate
- Known for: Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick, Blixen Museum. Green and quiet
- Best for: Families, couples, wildlife focus
Lang'ata
Lang'ata runs along the north-western side of the park, between Karen and Wilson Airport. It is where you find Main Gate, the KWS headquarters, the Safari Walk, Bomas of Kenya, Carnivore and the Giraffe Centre, so the morning drive to the gate is the shortest of any area. Accommodation is mostly camps, guesthouses and a few hotels rather than big towers, which keeps it quiet. It is the most practical choice if you plan several game drives or a full day in the park, and it is good value for budget travellers.
- Park access: Closest to Main Gate
- Known for: Next to the park, Bomas and Carnivore
- Best for: Early game drives, budget camps
Westlands
Westlands is Nairobi's second downtown, a few kilometres north-west of the CBD. Glass office towers, malls, rooftop bars and many of the city's best restaurants sit here, and the Nairobi Expressway gives a fast link to JKIA. It is the liveliest place to stay, especially Thursday to Saturday nights. The downside for safari guests is distance: Westlands is the furthest central area from the park, though at 05:00 the roads are clear. Choose Westlands if food, nightlife and meetings matter as much as wildlife.
- Park access: Furthest of the central areas; longer pre-dawn drive
- Known for: Nightlife, restaurants, malls, Expressway access
- Best for: Nightlife, business, first-time visitors
Kilimani
Kilimani sits just west of the CBD and is one of the city's main residential districts, with apartment blocks, cafes, the Yaya Centre and the Arboretum nearby. It has Nairobi's widest choice of apartments and serviced flats, which makes it the default for families, long stays and travellers who want a kitchen. Neighbouring Kileleshwa and Lavington are similar. The drive to Main Gate is moderate, shorter than from Westlands.
- Park access: Moderate drive to Main Gate
- Known for: Apartments, cafes, Yaya Centre
- Best for: Long stays, serviced apartments
CBD
The Central Business District is the historic heart of Nairobi, home to KICC, City Market, Parliament, the Railway Museum, Jamia Mosque and grand old hotels such as the Norfolk and the Stanley. Main Gate is about 8 km away along Lang'ata Road. Staying here works well if you want to walk the city with a guide during the day and do a game drive the next morning. After dark the CBD empties out, so most visitors take a taxi in the evening.
- Park access: About 8 km to Main Gate
- Known for: Historic hotels, museums, walking tours
- Best for: Sightseeing, short stays
Upper Hill
Upper Hill rises just south of the CBD and is Nairobi's office and hospital district, with business hotels and newer towers. It is quiet at night and closer to the park than Westlands, a sensible middle ground for business travellers who want a game drive before work.
- Park access: Short drive to Main Gate
- Known for: Business hotels, quieter at night
- Best for: Business trips
Gigiri
Gigiri, in the north of the city, is home to the United Nations offices and many embassies. It is calm, green and secure, with Village Market, Two Rivers and Karura Forest nearby. The park is the furthest away of the areas here, so pickups still leave at 05:00 but expect the longest early drive.
- Park access: Long drive to the park; best on quiet early roads
- Known for: UN offices, Village Market, Karura Forest
- Best for: Diplomatic and NGO visitors
Near JKIA (Mombasa Road)
Mombasa Road runs past the eastern side of the park to JKIA. Hotels here are built for travellers in transit, and some, such as Emara Ole-Sereni, overlook the park plains. East Gate is close, so this is the smartest base for layovers, late-night arrivals and dawn flights. Traffic on Mombasa Road can be heavy in the daytime, but the Expressway above it helps.
- Park access: Close to East Gate
- Known for: Airport access, some park views
- Best for: Layovers, early flights
Kilimani and Upper Hill sit between the CBD and the park, a sensible middle ground.

How to choose where to stay
Start with your main reason for visiting. Wildlife first: Karen or Lang'ata. A short layover: near JKIA. Business and nightlife: Westlands. Long stay with a kitchen: Kilimani.
If you only have one night
Stay close to where you start the next day. Landing late and flying out after a game drive? A hotel on Mombasa Road keeps you minutes from East Gate and the airport. Starting a longer safari the next morning? Karen and Lang'ata put you on the right side of the city for the roads south and west.
If you are travelling with children
Karen and Lang'ata have the most space and the most child-friendly sights: the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick nursery, the Safari Walk and Bomas. Apartments in Kilimani give you a kitchen and separate rooms. Read our guide to the park with children.
If you are on a budget
Camps and guesthouses in Lang'ata offer the best value close to the park. Shared game drives cost from $75 per person on weekdays, or $55 per person at weekends, with park fees separate. See solo traveller tips.
If you are here for business
Westlands, Upper Hill and Gigiri hold most offices. A half-day drive with a 05:00 pickup gets you back by late morning.
Booking and safety tips
- Book directly on the official hotel site or a well-known platform, and check the exact address before you pay.
- Ask the hotel whether the front desk is staffed at 04:45, so you can leave for your 05:00 pickup without trouble.
- Ask for a packed breakfast if your hotel offers one; game drives start before most breakfast services open.
- Use registered taxis or ride apps at night, and keep valuables out of sight in traffic.
- Carry a light jacket. Nairobi sits at about 1,700 m and early mornings are cool.
- Share your hotel name and room number with us when you book so the driver can find you.
Area comparison for 05:00 pickups
Every pickup is at 05:00 so you reach the gate at 06:00. The closer your hotel is to the gate, the more relaxed that early start feels.

What each price band means
$ means budget camps, hostels and simple guesthouses. $$ means comfortable mid-range hotels with a restaurant and secure parking. $$$ means luxury hotels, boutique lodges and manor houses with full service.
Prices in Nairobi swing with the season, conferences and school holidays, so the same room can cost very different amounts in different weeks. Always check the official site for your dates. Many hotels quote rates in US dollars, and some offer lower resident rates for Kenyan citizens and residents with ID.
Kenyan food to try while you stay
Try nyama choma (roast meat) with kachumbari salad and ugali, plus chapati, sukuma wiki, pilau and mandazi. Wash it down with Kenyan tea or coffee.
- Nyama choma: goat or beef roasted over charcoal, the social meal of Kenya, usually shared at a table with friends.
- Ugali: a firm maize porridge eaten with the hands and used to scoop stews and greens.
- Sukuma wiki: braised collard greens, a daily staple.
- Chapati: soft layered flatbread, a favourite at weekends and celebrations.
- Pilau: spiced rice with roots on the Swahili coast.
- Mandazi: lightly sweet fried dough, perfect with chai.
- Samosa: a legacy of Nairobi's Asian community, sold everywhere from street stalls to cafes.
- Githeri: maize and beans, simple and filling.
- Kenyan tea and coffee: Kenya is a major grower of both. Chai is milky and sweet; coffee is best in specialist cafes.
Most hotels serve both Kenyan and international food. For a real nyama choma experience, ask your driver for a local spot; it is often the best meal of a Nairobi trip.
Getting from the airport to your area
From JKIA, Mombasa Road hotels are the closest, followed by the CBD and Upper Hill, then Lang'ata and Karen to the south-west, then Westlands and Gigiri to the north. The Nairobi Expressway is the fastest route to Westlands and the CBD.
From Wilson Airport, the domestic airport near Main Gate, Lang'ata, Karen, Upper Hill and the CBD are all close. If you fly in from a safari in the Mara or Amboseli, Karen or Lang'ata makes a relaxed final night. We arrange transfers from JKIA and Wilson to any hotel; message us your flight number and hotel name.
What to do near each base
Each area has its own set of easy sights, so you can fill the afternoon after a morning game drive without long drives across the city.
From Karen and Lang'ata: the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick nursery hour at 11:00, the Karen Blixen Museum, Kazuri Beads, Oloolua Forest, Bomas of Kenya and the Safari Walk are all close. Lunch at The Talisman or dinner at Carnivore rounds off the day. A full day here can mix a 06:00 game drive with three or four of these stops.
From the CBD and Upper Hill: walk to KICC, City Market, the Railway Museum, the Nairobi Gallery, Uhuru Park and Jamia Mosque, ideally with a guide on a city walking tour. The National Museum and Snake Park are a short drive north.
From Westlands and Kilimani: the National Museum, the Museum of Illusions, the Arboretum and Karura Forest are nearby, along with the city's busiest restaurant and bar scene.
From Gigiri: Village Market, its regular Maasai Market, Two Rivers and Karura Forest are close.
From Mombasa Road: East Gate and a quick game drive, the SGR terminus at Syokimau for the Madaraka Express, and the airport.
