JKIA layover planner

Enter your two flight times to see how long you would have inside the park.

How it works:

  • 75 minutes from landing to meeting your guide (immigration and arrivals). Add 30 minutes if you must collect bags.
  • 35 minutes each way between JKIA and East Gate.
  • Back at the terminal 2 hours before an international departure, 90 minutes before a domestic one. Add 30 minutes to re-check bags.
  • Park gates open 06:00 and close 18:00.

How the drive runs

The guide meets you at the arrivals point we confirm on WhatsApp, with a name board if you ask. The drive to East Gate is often 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and terminal. You enter on the eCitizen ticket you bought for that date. The drive covers the plains, the dams and the skyline. We leave the park so you are back at JKIA at least 90 minutes before an international departure.

Kenya eTA rules for layovers

To leave the airport you need a Kenyan electronic travel authorisation (eTA) unless your nationality is exempt. Under the 2025 rules, citizens of East African Community countries are exempt for stays of up to 180 days, and most other African nationals for up to 60 days. Transit passengers who stay inside the airport do not need an eTA, but a layover safari means leaving the airport, so you must have one.

  • Where to apply: only on the official site, etakenya.go.ke.
  • Transit eTA: a transit category is available on the official site for travellers passing through.
  • When to apply: well before you fly; do not wait until you land.
  • Exemptions: the 2025 rules list countries whose citizens are exempt; check the official site for your passport.
JKIA terminal building

Terminals, exit and re-entry

JKIA Terminal 1 has concourses 1A to 1E. Most international arrivals use 1E, Kenya Airways uses 1A, and domestic flights use 1D. Terminal 2 serves some other airlines. To join a layover safari you clear immigration and customs, meet your guide in arrivals, and later re-enter through departures security and check-in.

Minimum layover time

Allow at least about 6 hours between landing and your next departure. About 75 minutes goes on landing, immigration and meeting your guide, about 35 minutes each way on the drive, and you should be back at the airport 2 hours before an international flight. That leaves roughly 2 to 2.5 hours in the park on a 6-hour layover.

Luggage

If your bags are checked through to your final destination, you only carry hand luggage. If you have to collect your bags, they can ride in the vehicle, or you can use the paid left-luggage service at JKIA; ask at the KAA information desk.

Check-in for your onward flight

Check your airline's check-in opening and closing times. If you already have an onward boarding pass, you still need to pass departures security and immigration before your gate.

Distances, drive times and traffic

East Gate is usually 20 to 40 minutes from JKIA. Main Gate on Lang'ata Road takes longer. Traffic on Mombasa Road can be heavy in the morning and evening peaks, and the Nairobi Expressway helps on trips into the city.

We plan the route on the day. On a short layover we use East Gate and the eastern plains so you spend your time with animals, not in traffic.
