Self-drive vs a guided tour

Self-drive is allowed, and it suits visitors who know the park. You pay the KWS fee for each person and for the vehicle, stay on the roads, and leave by 18:00. A saloon car sits low in long grass, and without a guide on the radio you miss most of what is out there. A guided tour gives you a pop-up roof, a driver-guide who knows where the lions and rhinos were this week, and no navigation at 06:00.

Booking platform vs booking direct

Booking platforms list tours run by local tour companies. Booking direct with us puts you in one WhatsApp chat with the team that will collect you: we confirm the price, the pickup time and the vehicle, and you can change plans with a message. Our prices are published on every tour page.

KWS VIP van vs our tours

Kenya Wildlife Service lists its own VIP van on the park page, booked with the warden. Our tours add hotel pickup, a choice of safari van or Land Cruiser, and booking on WhatsApp any day of the week. See tour van charges for the KWS rates.

Taxi or Uber to the gate

A taxi gets you to the Main Gate, but visitors may not walk the park. You still need a vehicle to go in. The weekend drive from Kencom, or any private tour with hotel pickup, solves both.

Quick answers

Can I visit Nairobi National Park without a tour?

Yes, in your own or a rented vehicle. You pay each person's KWS fee plus a vehicle fee, stay on the roads, and leave by 18:00. You cannot walk in or arrive by taxi and walk the plains.

Is it cheaper to self-drive Nairobi National Park?

Sometimes, if you already have a car. Add car hire, fuel and the KWS vehicle fee, and the weekend Land Cruiser drive at KSh 4,500 per person, with a guide, is often the better deal.

Should I book through a booking site or direct?

Booking direct with the company that runs the drive means you agree the price, pickup and timing in one WhatsApp chat with the team that will collect you.

Is the Nairobi Safari Walk an alternative to a game drive?

It is a different experience: a boardwalk past animals in enclosures beside the Main Gate. The game drive is the only way to see free-roaming lions, rhinos and giraffes in the park.
