Hippos in Nairobi National Park
Hippos live in the Athi and Mbagathi river pools on the park's southern edge. Hippo Pools is the one spot where you can leave the vehicle and walk a short trail with an armed KWS ranger.
By day, hippos rest in the water with only eyes and ears showing. Late afternoon is often better, as they grow restless before leaving the water to graze at night. Look for Nile crocodiles on the banks too.
The ranger leads the walk. Stay with the group, keep to the path, and wear closed shoes. Toddlers who need carrying are safer in the vehicle near a river with hippos and crocodiles.
Hippo Pools is a longer drive from the Main Gate, so it fits best on a half-day or full day. JKIA layover drives reach it fastest through East Gate.
Look for hippos on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.
More animal guides: zebras, cheetahs and leopards, with where and when each is usually seen.
