Zebras in Nairobi National Park
Plains zebras are one of the animals a first-time visitor can reasonably hope to see. They use the open grass, often in small herds, and they stand still long enough for a photograph.
The viaduct and the skyline in the same frame as a zebra are normal here. That is the park's geography, not a trick of editing. The southern bypass and the city edge are part of what you are looking at. The animals are still wild, and they still move off if a vehicle is careless.
Zebra are also the right expectation to set with children. A lion is a hope. A zebra is the animal that usually makes the morning feel like a safari even when the cats are hidden. Ostrich use the same grass. You can see one in the foreground of the skyline photograph on our homepage.
If you are choosing between a very short layover and no safari at all, zebra, giraffe, and the skyline are the realistic return. Rhino and lion need more time in the park.
Look for zebras on a half-day private game drive at $300 per group (your group only, park fees paid separately), or join the weekend Land Cruiser drive from KSh 4,500 per person.
More animal guides: buffalo, hippos, cheetahs, birds and leopards, with where and when each is usually seen.
